Teams, Players & Rosters
Create teams, put players on them, and show a team's roster in your app with the Roster action.
Overview
The Teams & Players section holds your club's teams and players. Each team has a display profile (name, logos and colours) and a roster of players. Add a Roster action to any stack to show a team's roster in your app as a scrolling row of player cards. Creating players, filling in their profiles, recording permission and publishing are covered in Player Profiles.
What fans see on a roster depends on your club's public roster setting. See What Fans See.
Step 1 — Create a Team
Go to Teams & Players → Teams and select Create New Team.
Roster visibility
- Internal — the roster is never shown publicly. This is the default.
- Public — the roster can be shown in your app. Who appears on it depends on your club's public roster setting.
- Per-player opt-in (older setting) — only offered on teams that already use it. While your club shows the current roster, only players who were opted in before player profiles appear. Once your club shows published profiles, it works the same as Public.
The notes on a team's Info and Roster tabs describe rosters that show published profiles. Until your club switches, see What Fans See.
Until your club switches to published profiles, everyone on a Public team appears in your app under their legal name. For teams that include juniors, keep the roster Internal until their profiles are published with permission.
Step 2 — Add Players
Create players in Teams & Players → Players. A player is created once and can belong to more than one team, e.g. their club side and a representative squad. Each player has a profile with their private records and the public profile fans see once it's published. See Player Profiles.
Step 3 — Build the Roster
You need the Manage player records permission to add players to teams or remove them. You can do it from either side:
- On the player: in Current teams on their profile, select Change.
- On the team: select the edit (pencil) button next to the team, then the Roster tab. Choose a player under Add a player to this team and select Add To Roster, or select Remove next to a player. Each row shows whether the player's profile is published.
Changes made here or on the player's profile are recorded in the player's team history.
Step 4 — Display the Roster in Your App
Open the stack where you want the roster to appear (Stacks → edit), add a new action, and choose Roster. Then configure:
What Fans See
The roster appears as a horizontally scrolling row of player cards, each with the player's photo (or initials), name, and number and position. Tapping a player opens their card or their profile link, depending on the roster's tap setting. The card shows the player's photo or initials, name, number and position, team, bio, and a Full profile button when they have a link.
Your club's public roster setting
What fans see on Public and Opt-in rosters depends on one club setting, Public rosters show. A club admin changes it in Players → Data access and settings → Settings. Every club starts on The current roster.
| The current roster (starting setting) | Published profiles only | |
|---|---|---|
| Who appears | Everyone on a Public team and opted-in players on an Opt-in team, except players whose permission was recorded with Name unticked | Players with a published profile |
| Name | Legal first and last name | Display name |
| Photo | The CMS portrait set before player profiles | Profile photo, if there's permission |
| Bio | None | Bio, if there's permission |
| Profile link | The detailed profile URL set before player profiles | Profile link from the public profile |
| Number and position | From Player details, as soon as they're saved | From Player details, once you publish changes |
While your club shows the current roster:
- A new player on a Public team appears straight away under their legal name.
- Opt-in lists can't be changed, because the old "Show on public rosters" switch has gone.
- Unpublishing doesn't hide a player. Recording permission with Name unticked does.
- Display names, bios, profile photos and profile links added on the profile page don't reach fans yet.
Before switching to published profiles:
- Add each player's profile link to their public profile. Links set before player profiles don't carry over.
- Publish the profile of everyone who should appear, or select Publish changes for profiles you've edited since publishing. Players without a published profile drop off public rosters when you switch.
- Check old CMS portraits. They no longer show on rosters, but they stay in your CMS library. Delete any you shouldn't keep.
The switch applies to every Public and Opt-in roster in your club as soon as it's saved. You can switch back at any time, and players whose permission was recorded with Name unticked stay hidden either way.
Adding a player to a team or taking them off shows in the app the next time the stack is opened. Once your club shows published profiles, edits to a profile, including number and position, need Publish changes.
Troubleshooting
- The roster doesn't appear in the app — check the team's roster visibility: Internal rosters are never shown. If your club shows published profiles, at least one player on the team needs a published profile.
- A player is missing — check they're on the team's Roster tab. If your club shows published profiles, check their profile is published. If it shows the current roster, a player on an Opt-in team appears only if they were opted in before player profiles, and a player whose permission was recorded with Name unticked stays hidden.
- An unpublished player still appears — your club still shows the current roster. Record permission with Name unticked to hide them, or switch to published profiles.
- A tap opens the card instead of the link — the player has no link, or the roster is set to Show the player card. While your club shows the current roster, the link is the detailed profile URL set before player profiles.
